Rod Planck Photography Workshops

by Rod Planck

Rod Planck’s Photography Workshops and Tours are designed to help photographers of all skill levels improve their technical ability, expand their creative expression and enhance their enjoyment of nature and photography.

Our small class size ensures an informal atmosphere in which all may learn and improve their photographic techniques.

We offer three programs to fit the needs of photo enthusiasts.

Standard Workshops. A unique blend of classroom instruction enhanced with numerous instructional field trips, the standard workshops provide a generous amount of instruction on many facets of nature photography. They are appropriate for beginners through advanced photographers and are an excellent choice for first-time attendees.

Advanced Workshops. These workshops explore the more complex aspects of nature photography through classroom and extensive field instruction. Topics such as advanced metering and creativity are discussed in depth. In addition, we explore digital workflow as it applies to converting raw files and print images and the captioning, cataloging and safeguarding of images. Advanced workshops are ideal for photographers with a clear understanding of photographic fundamentals and a comfortable familiarity with their camera systems.

Tours. Our tours provide extensive photographic opportunities for advanced photographers. Tours are primarily a field experience; depending on the location, there is little or no classroom instruction. However, while in the field we will explore composition, exposure, equipment and the techniques used for capturing the location’s unique subjects.

Note that during Advanced Workshops and Tours instruction is streamlined to fit both the needs of participants and the photographic possibilities of the location.

All sessions place emphasis on the use of ethical field techniques.

Interview: Photographer Tema Stauffer discusses winning AOL’s ’25 for 25′ Grant for innovation in the arts

Published: Sunday, March 20, 2011, 7:00 AM

By Simon A. Thalmann

Kalamazoo native Tema Stauffer is a photographer based in Brooklyn, N.Y., whose work has been exhibited at Jen Bekman Gallery and Daniel Cooney Fine Art Gallery in New York, as well as galleries and institutions both nationally and internationally.

She has shot for publications including The Chicago Reader, The City Pages, The Rake Magazine, Lavender Magazine, The Village Voice and W Magazine, and her work was included in a survey of Contemporary U.S. Photography at the Houston Fotofest 2010 Biennial.

Stauffer, 37, currently teaches at The School at the International Center of Photography and William Paterson University. She also curates and writes for Culturehall, an online resource for contemporary art.

In 2010 she was awarded an AOL “25 for 25” Grant of $25,000 for innovation in the arts. We caught up with her by e-mail to ask her about her work and how the grant has impacted her career so far.

MLive: Tell us a little bit about your background. How did you get your start in photography and why did you stick with it?

Tema Stauffer: My father taught in the sociology department at Kalamazoo College, and I grew up in a community of liberal academics and their families. My parents, Robert and Trudy Stauffer, recognized my enthusiasm for art and enrolled me in art classes at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts beginning at age 5, and I experimented with every medium.

I took my first photography class at the KIA with Jim Riegel when I was a junior in high school. Our first assignment was to shoot a portrait on slide film and I took moody pictures of my best friend in the cemetery on West Main Street. The light was gorgeous, and Jim gave me positive feedback about these first results.

I fell in love with photography at once. I loved the quiet and mysterious atmosphere of the darkroom and I loved driving around Kalamazoo looking for subjects — old buildings, friends and strangers, people at the Rex Café and in the launderette across the street. Photography awakened a sense of adventure and a means of visual storytelling.

When I began my first year as an undergraduate student at Oberlin College, I took more advanced photography classes and I knew that photography was my path.  It’s a hard path, like all creative paths, but I never stopped pursuing this passion. I completed my MFA in Photography at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1998 and then began working as a teaching artist and freelance photographer.
